Google’s August 2023 core update: Impact and strategies for recovery

Google recently rolled out its much-anticipated August 2023 core update on 22 August, marking its second broad core algorithm update of the year. The update, which is expected to take up to two weeks to complete, aims to refine search results for users.

Unlike previous updates, the August 2023 update appears to have a more subdued impact on a wide range of sites, as reported by the SEO community. Notable movement was observed around August 25th, with some websites experiencing substantial gains or losses in Google Search visibility, ranging from 20% to 80%. However, the update’s influence seems less widespread compared to previous core updates.

Google has recommended a patient approach for those who have been negatively impacted, focusing on content quality improvement rather than immediate technical solutions. Experts emphasise that Google’s algorithm changes may take time to settle, and consistent content enhancement is key to navigating the evolving landscape of search rankings.
